
[A pandemic era] Sudden death: How to cope with grief when you do not have a chance to say goodbye
In the pandemic era, patients suffered from coronavirus disease or other severe illnesses may not be able to say goodbye to their loved ones even though they are facing death due to the suspension of hospital visits. Bereavement is an unspeakable pain; in the face of the sudden death of a loved one without being able to prepare, emotions are mixed with guilt, powerlessness, and regret, become an insurmountable grief.
Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation initiated the “Family in Crisis Support” pilot project in collaboration with the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and St. James’ Settlement to provide one-stop emergency financial assistance and counselling service for families in a crisis situation, helping them go through difficult times and get back on track.
Ah Ching’s husband, who passed away suddenly during the pandemic, left her to live with her 10-year-old son. After a year of grieving, she has learnt to live with her grief, to live and mourn at the right time. She hopes to use her story to inspire others who are facing sudden bereavement, and to find the meaning of life in the midst of grief.
